It isn’t just for podcasts anymore

Remember that famous old ad campaign for Florida orange juice that had the tagline “It isn't just for breakfast anymore?" The local growers association wanted to change the way people think about orange juice and get more people buying/drinking (and they likely succeeded).

Radio stations always want to get more people listening. There are plenty of ways to do it, with the creation of new, compelling content being primary. But putting that accepted wisdom aside for a second, there’s obviously a tech component to this as well. Disseminate your content through additional formats/channels, where certain people prefer to do their listening, and you capture more ears.

We’ve talked a lot about accomplishing this through what’s known these days as “broadcast-to-podcast” (somewhat akin to what the radio world historically called “time shifting”) – in a nutshell, repurposing radio streams as podcasts. Our own product Splice helps a number of audio publishers do this now.

But what about actually expanding the nature of a given format to make it more versatile?

With the advent of podcasts years ago, listeners and audio businesses everywhere have gotten used to several key distinctions between that format and live streaming. The ability to listen whenever you want is the central tenet of “non-linear” audio like podcasts, music on digital services, etc. As we’re in the business of offering audio publishers as many technology options as possible to help them grow, it made sense for us to develop more on-demand functionality for streaming too.

So say hello to Live Stream Replay. It’s simple really: miss a bit of your favorite live stream this morning? Now you can just start it over and not miss anything. Video has included this capability for a while – there’s no reason why audio shouldn't have an easy-to-navigate version too.

Here’s what it looks like in our player:

Key features include:
• Listen to a show you might have missed on demand
• History can be available for up to thirty days

Several of our partners are already leveraging Live Stream Replay to keep listeners enjoying their content in whatever way they choose. If you’re a streaming publisher and want to learn more, contact us here.
